Audio Interview with the founder of Aiki Ninjutsu ninja and samurai martial arts

Aiki Ninjutsu martial arts was founded in 2002 by Tom Jotoshi Maienza. Mr. Maienza blended together the philosophy, strategy and tactics of twelve systems of martial arts in which he became proficient during his over 30 years of martial practice. He also wove in his extensive experience of meditation, MMA, boxing, and wrestling.  Nationally, he is among the highest ranked martial arts masters of several classical martial and meditative arts. He trained with the top, most knowledgeable martial art  and meditation masters in the world. For over thirty years, he trained daily. He began teaching professionally,  sharing his knowledge and understanding since 1988. He compiled an incomparable set of 36 secret teachings and 16 foundational principles that lets Aiki Ninjutsu martial arts stand out from its contemporary martial systems.

Aiki Ninjutsu is a martial art that Maienza created by combining twelve different Japanese lineages that have been passed down for over a thousand years. Six of these systems were used by Samurai families and six were used by Ninja clans of feudal Japan. These twelve lineages have all been studied as individual martial arts. Aiki Ninjutsu is the first martial art to combine these systems to create a curriculum utilizing the best of each art.

On paper, one might feel that the twelve systems have opposing philosophies and strategies. This could not be further from the truth. By combining these systems, a student learns how to utilize their opponent’s Ki, or energy, as well as how to make his own Ki as powerful as possible. It becomes a complete system by employing the Yin and Yang (China) or In and Yo (Japan) philosophies. This is an understanding that all things in life have duality, or two sides, and that nothing in and of itself is good or bad, strong or weak, etc.

The Jizaikan Aiki Ninjutsu, ninja and samurai martial arts traditions include striking, throws, joint locks, grappling, ground fighting escapes, multiple attacker and modern weapons defenses to include firearms, knives and clubs and historical weapons training to include; katana, wakizashi, rokushakubo (6 ft. staff), sanshakubo or hanbo (3ft. staff), kusarifundo (weighted chain weapon), tanto (knife) and shuriken (throwing blades). These weapons are taught for their historical importance as well as giving the Aiki Ninjutsu martial art student the skills necessary to use any everyday object as a weapon for his defense. These skills are taught int he martial artts school as well as outside of the school. Martial arts classes meet out in natural surroundings, such as wilderness settings.

The main focus of the Jizaikan martial art school student is to become a modern day warrior which is defined in the Jizaikan as someone who is “an empowered and compassionate protector of others.” The Jizai warrior strives to become a positive force in his community while at the same time guiding his life experience in a way that allows him to live the life they want while making the world a better place. To accomplish this goal, the modern day warrior must understand that every technique, strategy, principle and secret he will learn in the course of training has two sides, an omote or obvious side and an ura or not so obvious side. In simple terms, each technique learned in the dojo (class or school) is a vessel that contains a lesson that can be used in a physical confrontation as well as in everyday life relationships. By understanding and mastering these secrets, the Jizai warrior student will understand how to guide himself and the people in his life in a way that will benefit all of mankind. Because of the violent nature of martial arts, it is important that the true practitioner of the warrior arts understand that he must balance the devastating techniques he learns with the proper training to attain a good heart. This two-fold path of the warrior will enable him to be a benefit to society instead of a detriment.

The Jizaikan martial art school student will have a fuller understanding of the importance of training the mind, body and spirit to attain the true understanding and mastery of a warrior. In the classes offered at the schools, similar to the ones offered in Joliet, students of Aiki Ninjutsu schools learn how to embody the Honor, Integrity and Mastery that so many marital artists have sought, but so few have found.

The definition of Jizaikan

The first half of the name Jizaikan is made of two characters japanese charachters that represent “Ji” and “zai”

Ji – self, spontaneously, naturally

Zai – be, exist, to be located/residing in

Jizai is a “code word” in Japanese culture, meaning “tapping into cosmic creativity.” It also means “personal freedom.” This term is used to indicate the samurai use of Zen meditation practice and ethics, allowing one to think freely without being influenced by custom, conventional wisdom or any preconception. Jizai thinking, involves meditating until one achieves the ultimate truth that expresses the innermost feelings or aspirations common to man. In Japanese product design, it is used to find the ultimate in function, refined simplicity and beauty, which is an unending process of refinement and recycling. This translates to “complete freedom.” This term often is used to describe an attitude of insatiability. The warrior can never become satisfied. The training methods, techniques and skill level of the warrior must always be improved upon. To never become arrogant or complacent in one’s ability is the goal.

The second half of the name Jizaikan, “Kan” , refers to it being an organization. The Jizaikan is an organization of people and schools who believe in constant improvement of self and the technology that is taught.
